At just 19 years old, Malibela Ramokoena, a Grade 11 student at Mphaki High School, faced the heartbreaking possibility of dropping out due to her parents’ financial struggles. But when the “Her Voice” project was introduced at her school in 2024, Malibela saw a lifeline. She approached the project team, expressing her strong desire to stay in school.
Soon after, she became involved as a weekend research assistant, mobilizing other youths and contributing to the project.
Recognizing her dedication, she was selected to receive 20 hybrid layer chickens as part of the start-up support. In just three months, Malibela began selling eggs—two trays a week at R70 each—and used the income to pay her school fees in instalments.
Her attendance and performance improved noticeably, with teachers commending her determination. With her parents caring for the chickens while she’s at school, the small business continues to thrive.
“I want to be a model farmer in my village, with a bigger chicken farm and hatchery,” says Malibela confidently.
Now seen as a role model by her peers, Malibela’s story is turning the tide for other girls in her community. Her class teacher shared, “She’s proof that earning a small income can keep girls in school and away from early marriage. She’s become someone others admire and want to emulate.” Her Journey Speaks Volumes.
Her story is a powerful testament to how the right support can turn vulnerability into strength, and silence into leadership. Thanks to the generous support of CFLI, the Her Voice project—championed by the Butterfly Sanctuary and the community—has made remarkable strides in reducing girls’ vulnerability and school dropouts. Together, we’re not just changing lives; we’re shaping futures.
