Volunteer Opportunities and Resources

Current volunteers on our team

The Butterfly Sanctuary organization plays a vital role in supporting and empowering teen mothers in the local communities. Currently, they have a dedicated team of more than 34 local volunteers who themselves are teen mothers or have direct experience working with teen mothers and vulnerable female youths.
These dedicated volunteers are strategically distributed across three key districts: Mafeteng, Mohales Hoek, and Leribe, serving as pilot areas for the organization’s impactful initiatives.

These local facilitators serve as pillars of strength and hope within their communities. They offer essential services such as counseling, training, and mentoring to various groups:

Teen Mothers: They provide guidance and emotional support to teen mothers, helping them navigate the challenges of early motherhood, education, and personal development.

Female Youths Experiencing Abuse: These volunteers offer a safe space for young girls who have experienced abuse, providing them with the necessary resources and counseling to heal and rebuild their lives.

Expectant Teen Mothers with No Support: Pregnant teens with little or no support find a lifeline in these local facilitators. They receive guidance on pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, and access to crucial resources.

Those Living in Abject Poverty: For individuals living in extreme poverty, these volunteers deliver training and mentorship sessions focused on financial literacy and livelihood initiatives. These programs empower individuals to improve their financial stability and enhance their quality of life.

In essence, the Butterfly Sanctuary organization’s local volunteers are the driving force behind a multifaceted approach to addressing the needs of teen mothers and vulnerable female youths. Through their dedication and expertise, they create positive change, foster resilience, and provide essential resources for individuals facing various challenges in the districts of Mafeteng, Mohales Hoek, and Leribe.

Becoming a volunteer with Butterfly Sanctuary in working with Teenage Mothers in Lesotho

Are you interested in empowering young women who have been deeply affected by poverty and a lack of education?
Do you aspire to bring hope to disadvantaged teen mothers and girls who are raising children in underprivileged communities? Would you like to expand your experience while immersing yourself in the culture and terrain of Lesotho, the Mountain Kingdom? If so, the Butterfly Sanctuary offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to become compassionate social workers deeply connected with the challenges faced by impoverished communities.

Lesotho is a breathtakingly beautiful country blessed with awe-inspiring natural landscapes. Here, donkeys and horses are common, especially in mountainous regions. Additionally, Lesotho boasts a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. Among these traditions are the horse riders and dancers, known for their exceptional singing and storytelling abilities, as well as the captivating, enigmatic stories of Moshoeshoe, the founder of the Basotho nation.

Regrettably, every year, a significant percentage of girls under the age of 18 in Lesotho experience unplanned pregnancies, with estimates suggesting that a majority of these cases result from gender-based violence. Furthermore, a considerable number of these teenage girls come from impoverished and undereducated backgrounds, leaving them voiceless and vulnerable. This dire situation is compounded by the involvement of family members in many cases, as well as the overall poverty within their communities. Factors like limited employment opportunities and food insecurity due to unpredictable climate changes further exacerbate the vulnerability of these girls to abuse.

The Butterfly Sanctuary, in collaboration with Save the Mothers and Babies, endeavours to assist these young mothers and their children by imparting knowledge on indigenous chicken rearing, income generation, and essential business skills. Additionally, they provide education on human rights and protection. This initiative empowers women by granting them a degree of self-reliance and financial independence. Given the shortage of manpower and guidance, both organizations are in dire need of dedicated volunteers. As a volunteer with the Butterfly Sanctuary, you will play a pivotal role in supporting teenagers who have endured sexual assault, resulting in early pregnancies. Your responsibilities will include counseling, instilling hope, assisting in local children’s projects, life skills training, assertiveness training, and vocational skill development. Moreover, you will empower teenage mothers to rebuild their lives and achieve economic independence by collaborating on projects that generate consistent income for themselves and their children.

If you are enthusiastic about working closely with disadvantaged teenage mothers, immersing yourself in their culture and community traditions, and gaining valuable experience while exploring the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, don’t hesitate to reach out today to embark on this fulfilling journey.
